The essential syllabus of Start Sailing

overboard rescue
tacking & jibing
points of sail
rigging
anchoring
nomenclature
mooring skills
rules of the road
intro to navigation
basic sail shape
heaving to
reefing
docking
airfoil theory
singlehanding
important knots

These are the major categories: there are all kinds of smaller subtopics that are covered.

We strongly emphasize two things on the water: safety skills and boat handling.  Armed with a good foundation in these areas, you're best prepared to go out on your own.

Of course, we don't do this to the exclusion of everything else: Start Sailingsm exceeds the minimum requirements of ASA and US Sailing's basic keelboat standards.

You can keep sailing with rentals, membership in our sailing club, and more advanced courses.
It's a realistic goal to Start Sailingsm in the spring and be Bareboating by the fall!
