This sailing fool is Stephen Card, owner and operator of the Sailing Center.

Here's what you need to know about them (and a little more for good measure) in order to make an informed decision on where to learn to sail or keep your boat...

How we got where we are today is a long story, but I'll keep it short and sweet.  My father, Glenn F. Card, Jr., got into sailing rather casually decades ago and eventually bought himself a little daysailing keelboat.  He found himself too busy to use it as he moved up in the advertising world and rented it to people on the side.  He saw the potential for a rental market and bought a few more boats, but found that too many prospects weren't experienced enough to handle them safely on their own.  The logical next step was to start a school, and he took the plunge and gave up his VP position in a New York ad shop to undertake the endeavor.  That was 33 years ago.

Glenn's not with us anymore, but my mother and I carry on the tradition with this, our family's second school (my father sold the first school after 20 years of operation in preparation for retirement).  As it was a family business, my mother and I know the ins and outs of the industry.  I grew up in the sailing school industry, took formal lessons at our school once old enough, and eventually became one of the earliest ASA Certified Instructors in the early 1980's. While I try to get as much teaching in as I can at the Sailing Center, I do have to rely primarily on a staff of outstanding instructors.

An Industry Pioneer.  Glenn Card was one of the true pioneers in the sailing school industry, establishing one of the highest volume schools in the industry's history and introducing what could only be described as sweeping reforms.  An avid skier, Glenn adapted the concept of slalom courses from the ski slopes to sailing school.  (In the ski world, he used video-taping of ski-students for later evaluation.)  We use a different name for this now, but the concept is the same: our Obstacle Coursesm is still the most fun, efficient way to develop the basic skills used in all types of sailing, and it's a New York Sailing Center exclusive.

For decades, sailing schools had difficult choices to make in choosing boats for their basic sailing programs.  The ideal boat didn't exist in the real world.  Glenn Card pioneered the transition from the traditional Soling used by many programs (his included) to more appropriate teaching boats.

After mixed success with the J-24 (an excellent racing boat that's of very questionable merit for basic instruction), he settled on the Sonar, a 23-foot day-sailor and club racer that represented the greatest single advance in sailing school fleets and is still one of the better boats for the purpose, second perhaps only to our current Beneteau First 21  (in our humble, but considered, opinion).  Glenn even became the largest dealer for the Sonar.

Always quick to recognize the the tools and methodology of the future, Glenn was one of the earliest operators to get involved with the American Sailing Association, doing so in its inaugural year of 1983.  National standards for sailing schools, instructors and students did not exist in America prior to that.  Glenn immediately brought his school on board, and all instructors on the staff now had to earn these important credentials.

My father and I both earned our ASA certifications in October of 1983.  Glenn was certified to the level of Advanced Coastal Cruising Instructor, and even achieved the status of Instructor Evaluator up through the Basic Coastal Cruising level.  Other instructors on his staff became Instructor Evaluators at levels as high as Advanced Coastal Cruising.  (Instructor Evaluators run the certification clinics and determine the abilities of the candidates, and whether they qualify for certification.)

What did the advent of ASA lead to?
Four consecutive ASA School of the Year Awards!
