- 3 stops from Manhattan on R or V trains. Take G if in Brooklyn
or Queens. Or drive! Parking is good 'n plenty.
New for 2008 is our Radar Clinic, and
almost no one else is offering this. ASA recently introduced a new
certification endorsement for Radar, and this clinic leads to it.
Learn the principles and practicalities of marine Radar in three evenings
or two weekend mornings.
Topics include:

principles of Radar
-
major components
-
features & functions found on most units
-
interpreting the Radar screen
-
Radar for navigation: bearings and ranges
-
Radar for collision avoidance: rapid plotting
of Radar targets
-
adjusting controls for weather and sea conditions
-
pitfalls and potential misinterpretation
The course is taught by Captain Stephen Glenn
Card, the Director of the Sailing Center. Captain Card has a Radar
Observer Unlimited endorsement on his USCG Master's License and is a candidate
for the ASA Radar Instructor endorsement (which will be official prior
to the clinic).
Tuition of $345 includes:

Practice with a PC based Radar Simulator

Course materials, including Radar Simulator
software (PC only).

Use of our plotting tools (we recommend you
bring your own)

ASA Radar exam and endorsement

NYSC Course completion certificate

March 9 & 16.
Location: Long
Island City at Broadway & Steinway Street (R and V trains from Manhattan,
and G train in Brooklyn/Queens). Or, drive – safe, convenient parking.
Who can attend?
Anyone. We recommend that you have at least Basic Cruising
or Coastal Nav (next CoNav schedule starts Sunday, January 27) before you
take the clinic, but again, it is not required to attend. Before
you can get the ASA Radar endorsement, however, you must have 104 (Bareboat).
Regardless of whether you sail or have certification, you will receive
a certificate from the Sailing Center upon successful completion of the
course.
