| Whether you’re brand new to GPS or fairly
fluent, you stand to benefit from this clinic. We cover everything
you need to safely use GPS to its fullest advantage - in conjunction with
a chart – and avoid the dangers of misuse and overreliance. While
GPS units vary in layout and features, the knowledge and skills you’ll
learn here apply to them all.
We developed this clinic after seeing a
need to get people back on track with their GPS units, and to teach beginners
the ropes before they get into trouble. Both user groups will get
more out of GPS with less trouble. Too many boaters rely too much
on GPS, and risk getting into real trouble when the power dies or the system
is temporarily unavailable or slow to give fixes. Many GPS users
fail to understand all the benefits - and pitfalls - of this powerful yet
potentially misleading system. We want to fix that, making sure boaters
can use GPS safely with a chart.
This is a classroom course with an occasional
trip outside for taking fixes and observing GPS features in action.

Certification Achieved:There
is no ASA or US Sailing standard for GPS, and no ASA or US
Sailing certification.
NY Sailing supplies an in-house
certificate
of completion for this course if you pass the brief quiz at the end
of the clinic (or subsequently). This certificate might be useful
in demonstrating to a charter firm that you are a good risk in areas that
are considered a navigational challenge. If you don't pass our quiz,
you will be given the opportunity to go over your exam with us and re-take
it at no extra charge.
